Mobile Testing Units (MTUs)
Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) are now available to Illinois motorists in the Chicago area. MTUs are specially equipped emissions testing vans that are deployed to select locations around Chicago to provide additional vehicle emissions testing options for the convenience of motorists. MTUs are coming to: Family Aquatic Center, 340 E. Palatine Rd., Palatine, IL 60067
Date and Time: Saturday, September 12, 2026, 8 AM to 2 PM
Eligible Vehicles: In order to receive an emissions test, motorists need to have received a test notice or registration renewal notice that shows an emissions test is required. Motorists can use the Vehicle Eligibility Check Tool https://illinoisairteam.net/vehicle-eligibility-check-tool by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or License Plate Number to identify if their vehicles are eligible to test. Illinois motorists now have the option to renew their registration tags at an MTU after their vehicle successfully passes an emissions test. No SOS renewal notice is needed. Acceptable forms of payment include Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. No cash is accepted. Service fees apply.
